How the two taxes are worked out
Under the new regime the calculator takes off the standard deduction of ₹75,000 and applies the slabs: nothing up to ₹4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% in steps of ₹4 lakh, and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays no tax because of the rebate under section 87A. A little above ₹12 lakh, the tax is capped at the amount by which income exceeds ₹12 lakh.
Under the old regime it takes off the standard deduction of ₹50,000 and the deductions you enter, then applies the slabs: nothing up to ₹2.5 lakh, 5% up to ₹5 lakh, 20% up to ₹10 lakh and 30% above. Taxable income up to ₹5 lakh gets a rebate of up to ₹12,500. Both add 4% health and education cess.
The rates are those published by the Income Tax Department and the Union Budget forFY 2026-27. The calculator covers salary income for a resident under 60, up to ₹50 lakh, where surcharge does not apply. Rules change, so check the Income Tax Department’s website before you rely on a figure.
Common questions
What is the difference between the old and new tax regimes?
The new regime has lower slab rates and a higher tax-free limit but allows very few deductions. The old regime has higher slab rates but lets you reduce your taxable income with deductions such as 80C, 80D and home loan interest. Which costs less depends on how much you can deduct.
Which deductions does the calculator count in the old regime?
Enter the total of the deductions you expect to claim in the old regime, such as 80C, 80D and home loan interest, in one box. The standard deduction of ₹50,000 is added for you. Check each deduction’s own limit before you enter it.
Is this calculator enough to file my return?
No. It estimates tax on salary income only and leaves out other income, capital gains, surcharge, TDS already paid and special cases. Use it to compare the regimes, and rely on the Income Tax Department’s own tools or a qualified professional for your return.
